Carob is the fruit of Ceratonia siliqua L., an evergreen tree member of the Mediterranean flora. Carob bark, rich in fibre and proteins, is edible and together with the leaves of the tree, it has been utilised as traditional medicine for the treatment of a number of ailments, including diabetes, diarrhoea, and hypocholesterolaemia. All parts of this tree also produce high amounts of phenolic acids and flavonoids, and this makes the plant an important producer of the therapeutic compounds: antioxidants, gastro-protectors, anti-inflammators, hypoglycemics, hypolipidemics, cardioprotectors, and antiproliferative-, anticancer-, and cytotoxic agents. In this study, the chemical composition of carob was determined by GC-MS and its extracts were tried on breast cancer cell lines. Chemical components were determinated for the Ceratonia siliqua L. extract, and the inhibitory activities of these chemicals against the Crystal structure of breast cancer protein (PDB ID: 1A52 and 1JNX) downloaded from the Protein Data Bank site were compared.
