Abstract

The ever-increasing demand for data and the emergence of new applications have placed immense pressure on the Medium Access Control (MAC) layer of TCP/IP networks. Traditional MAC protocols struggle to meet the performance and efficiency requirements of modern networks. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) have emerged as promising tools for addressing these challenges and enhancing MAC layer performance. This review paper provides a comprehensive overview of the role of AI and ML in MAC layer enhancement. It discusses various AI and ML techniques that have been applied to improve MAC layer performance, including channel selection, power control, and contention resolution. The paper also presents a comparison of different AI and MLbased MAC protocols and their performance in various network scenarios.
